Cycle Closet’s Winter Jacket Buying Guide

With hundreds of different cycling jackets available on the market it’s hard to determine which jacket will fit you and your personal riding needs the best. One of our main goals with Cycle Closet was to provide you, the customer, with choice and variety so you can find the jacket that YOU need. Let’s take a quick look at 3 of the most popular sub-categories of jackets and whether they might be what you’ve been looking for.

– Packable.
For when the weather is looking a little unpredictable, or you leave early when it’s chilly and you need a bit of extra protection over your kit, then a packable jacket is what you’re after. These jackets usually have a DWR coating making them water-resistant through light drizzle, and offer some wind blocking to keep your core warm. They are thin and lightweight, so they won’t make you overheat, and can be packed down into a jersey pocket.

– Softshell
Softshell jackets are for the temperature dips, but the forecast is mostly dry. They are thicker in construction – often lined with fleece, to ensure you are kept warm throughout your ride. These jackets are usually too big to be packed down, so will have to be worn when you know you’ll keep it on the entire ride. Again, these jackets may have a DWR coating to hold off slight showers but they are generally not waterproof. They will provide far more windblocking than their lightweight, packable counterparts.

– Waterproof
We are all familiar with the phrase “the weather is only as bad as your gear”, and that is truest when it comes to waterproof rain jackets. Waterproof jackets have taped seams and waterproof zips to prevent the rain making it’s way through. Look for waterproof ratings of at least 5,000 when choosing. All companies will claim their waterproof jackets are highly breathable, but breathability is usually somewhat sacrificed to achieve waterproofing. Look for added vents, or take our advice and invest in a good jacket for keeping warm and another for keeping dry!
